Shinkansen break

After a quite eventful weekend --revising a co-written article on Plato and Buddhism, attempting to change my iPhone battery, initiating self-combustion of battery and iPhone, waiting on the balcony with open so doors to change the air, cleaning the mess, visiting Zuihoden mausoleum complex, walking in a different neighborhood, buying German soprano recorder for Isabella’s music lesson, buying new iPhone, buying Uniqlo clothes for survival, traveling to a curious indoor playground area inside a shopping center with fake Dutch facade, meeting Isabella’s wonderful new friend and her lovely parents, rushing to Ikea to buy a chair that will not kill Jeroen’s back-- I am taking a little break. However the Shinkansen to Tokyo is too quick to properly relax. Now that I am done with the most urgent mails, I am almost there!

‘’You understand a place only when you have seen it in all seasons’’. That’s what  Miku   told us while teaching us how to dye with indigo in a tiny Tohoku mountain village .  Wanting to know the 4 seasons of  Minamisanriku,  she quit her job in Osaka and moved to this mountain place where she can enjoy a drink at night while watching the sea and the fireflies —after managing her indigo workshop, building a bed&breakfast and looking into other ways to revive this village, heavily hit by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.  I am abandoning Sendai and Tohoku in the middle of its season-story.  Now, in the rainy season, we have just visited the cedar forest of Haguro-san- the mountain of the present, one of the Dewa Sanzan: the three sacred mountains in the Yamagata prefecture. Hiraizumi As a young girl I tried to squeeze meaning out of a life that seemed peaceful, but empty and boring most of the time. I used to ask my grandmother to tell me stories about myself when I was even younger —a sheltered, uneventful, self-referential life. As a school kid I realized that one can paint meaning onto life: cartoons, history books, new stories. I could be not only Actarus longing for his life on Vega, but also Schliemann discovering Troy, Konrad Lorentz having new ducklings imprint on him. I am now looking at the Sendai skylight — out of the windows of room 507 of the International House Sanjo 2.  A lot of blinking red lights on high-rise buildings. Almost too much meaning to take in. The moment in which I continue savouring my Japanese winter... even if I would tend to freak out every time I think that it's drawing to a close

This morning we found ourselves back in Sendai —eating cereals at the breakfast table on a bright sunny winter morning, with a dusting of snow on the roofs in front of our windows. While we were comparing our cereals to yesterday's Okinawan breakfast with 6 different kinds of sea weeds, fruit jellies, onigiri and french toast with brown sugar, I realized that I have to write an ode to Japanese winter before it's over and we wake up in a cherry blossoms dream. Japanese winter days might be cold but they know how to pave them with delights. Sorry to start with the most obvious, but the warm toilet seat can really be a welcome goal on a chilly day, be it at the university, at a museum, or in a restaurant. And I will not go into the details of the warm bidet sprinkle —just watch the picture, or remember the experience if you had it. And what about the slippers?
